The Viral Hepatitis Control Office of the Department of Health conducted a press briefing on 20 February 2024. The briefing explained the latest situation of hepatitis B in Hong Kong and the Government’s effort on prevention and control of viral hepatitis. The public was reminded about the importance of early screening and treatment for hepatitis B.
As derived from the findings in Thematic Report on Viral Hepatitis of Population Health Survey (PHS) 2020-22,about 5.6% of the Hong Kong population, which is about 410 000 people, have hepatitis B. Among those tested positive for HBsAg, nearly 40% were not aware of their chronic hepatitis B (CHB) status, while about 70% did not have any medical follow-up for their liver diseases.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is most commonly transmitted through contact with blood. People at higher risk of HCV infection, such as people who inject drugs, men who have sex with men, HIV-positive people, etc. should get tested early. Treatment with oral direct-acting antiviral (DAA) can effectively cure HCV infection, reducing the risk of developing liver cancer.

Hepatitis B and C can be transmitted through contact with blood or body fluids of an infected person. If left untreated, chronic hepatitis
B and C can progress to cirrhosis and liver cancer. In Hong Kong, 80% of liver cancer cases are related to chronic hepatitis B. Early
diagnosis and management of hepatitis B and C can prevent liver cancer and save lives.
To promote awareness and knowledge on viral hepatitis among ethnic minorities (EM), Viral Hepatitis Control Office (VHCO) has
produced e-leaflets on hepatitis B and C in seven EM languages, including Hindi, Bahasa Indonesia, Nepali, Tagalog, Thai, Urdu and Vietnamese. They are available on the VHCO website (https://www.hepatitis.gov.hk/tc_chi/other_languages/index.html).

Today is the annual World Hepatitis Day marked by the World Health Organization. The Department of Health (DH) has adopted the
theme “Test hepatitis B Save your life” to remind family members and sexual partners of people with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and
people with a higher risk of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection to get tested and treated for hepatitis B early.
According to the latest local epidemiological studies, about 6% of the Hong Kong population had been infected with HBV, amounting to
about 400 000 people with hepatitis B. HBV can be transmitted from infected mothers to their babies, and through contact with blood or
body fluids of an infected person, or sexual contact. Some infected people cannot clear the virus and develop CHB. About 15 - 40% of untreated people with CHB may progress to life-threatening cirrhosis and liver cancer. In Hong Kong, liver cancer is the third leading
cause of cancer deaths and about 80% of liver cancer cases are related to CHB. Early identification and management of people with
CHB is one of the focus areas of the Hong Kong Viral Hepatitis Action Plan 2020 – 2024,with a view to reducing the disease burden
caused by CHB.

contact with blood or body fluids of an infected person. Some people fail to clear the virus and develop CHB. Family members (such
as parents, siblings and offspring) and sexual partners of people with CHB are considered at higher risk of infection.

This year the Department of Health has adopted the theme “Hepatitis B can cause cancer Get tested and treated early” to promote the importance of hepatitis B testing and follow-up, in particular for family members and sexual partners of people with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and others with a higher risk of infection.
In Hong Kong, around 540 000 people are chronically infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV). HBV can be transmitted from infected mothers to their babies, and through blood-borne or sexual contact with an infected person. Some infected people fail to clear the virus and develop CHB, which can cause cirrhosis and liver cancer. Early identification and management of people with CHB is one of the focus areas of theHong Kong Viral Hepatitis Action Plan 2020 – 2024, with a view to reducing the disease burden caused by CHB.

為便利市民使用「智方便」進行網上登記，衞生署已順利推出優化的中央器官捐贈登記名冊（中央名冊）系統。
在推出優化的中央名冊系統後，市民現可選擇以「智方便」進行網上登記，或以親身登記並同時提供香港身份證方式完成身分
核實。新的登記方法可在申請過程中同時完成身分核實，而無需隨後進行電話核實。
選擇不使用「智方便」登記或不提供香港身份證進行身分核實的申請人，可繼續以原有的登記方法，包括網上提交申請、郵寄
或親身提交申請，申請在中央名冊登記，並隨後以電話核實身分。不管使用哪一種申請方法，成功登記的申請人都會在提交
申請的14日內收到登記結果通知。
引入的新登記方法不會影響中央名冊現時儲存的紀錄。因此，已在中央名冊登記的市民無需重新登記。如欲了解更多詳情，
